Help! Where can I work or volunteer in the Southeast Michigan/Metro Detroit Area?

I am a college student and I have been home for 3 weeks. I am so bored. I was planning to get a job and volunteer at a local animal hospital but I have been applying to a bajillion jobs with no luck (and one unsuccessful interview). I may not be able to volunteer at the animal hospital because I have a cat allergy and the Vet there has to decide if it will be ok. I still would really like to volunteer at an animal shelter as a dog walker or something but I can't find one near me that accepts volunteers (Michigan Humane Society is all full). I am bored and I need something to do really soon. Does anyone know which specific places I would have the best luck at trying to get a job (I feel like I have applied everywhere. I am not going to be picky) and does anyone have some suggestions for places I could try to volunteer at? Thanks so much to any serious responses.

There are plenty of soup kitchens in Detroit that are always in need of help, and some even offer employment opportunities. I've done this in the past and find it a very rewarding experience. You'll be amazed by some of the stories the homeless have to tell.
