How do i get my dog to be people friendly?
She is very much like a guard dog, but she wouldn't even hurt a fly, but yet she isnt the most friendly dog you have ever met, when people try to greet her and pet her, strangers, she growls, but doesnt bite, she is barking loud when people come onto our property. How do i get my dog to be people friendly?
Oh boy I think I have the opposite problem - my lab is TOO people friendly! lol
Here's one suggestion for you: Have a friend or family member that your dog does like hold your dog on a leash. You should stand close by and have a person your dog doesn't know approach you. Interact with this person in a positive manner - laugh, hug, smile, etc. Let your dog see that the stranger is a nice person that can be trusted. If your dog growls, tell her 'it's okay this person is a nice person'. If your dog stops growling at the tone of your voice, give positive praise and a cookie. I'd continue this type of training over and over again - and eventually have it so that the stranger is the one giving praise and a cookie. Soon your dog should associate strangers with positive things - praise, cookies, etc.
It'll take a lot of patience and work, but I think you can do it!
NOTE: wanted to add, keep your dog on a leash and under control and don't let strangers approach your dog until you see changes in her behavior (ie stops growling, wags tail, etc) I really suggest a trainer of course!

Which grass-eating animal makes a great/best pet and why?
Have just bought a house on half a hectare (approx 1 1/4 acre with house etc taking up 1/3 of this) and would rather spend money on an animal to keep the grass down than buy a mower.
Out: goats, alpacas.
Must haves:
1. Needs to have a friendly nature and not spook easily. We have children aged 9 and 13 as well as a pet labrador which is about 2/3 average size.
2. Only eats grass and not other plants/ property. Don't want any property vandals due to sheer size or temprement either.
3. Minimal supplimentary feeding - we don't want to be a major contributer to the Co-op owner's Landcruiser.
4. Low maintenance - we don't want to be a major contributer to the Vet's Landcruiser either.
5. Doesn't need a companion (alpacas fret) or if it does what is the 'stocking rate'/hect. or acre.
Preferences (not set in concrete):
1. No hooves.
2. Nibbles the grass off, not rip it out the ground.
3. Doesn't want to escape - saves on installing an electric fence.
Thanks
Here's what you do, you get the local concrete distributor to stop by your house and cover your lawn. That way you don't contribute to the riches of the local co-op owner, it's a one time investment(unless it cracks) and you don't have to spend a dime on feeding some ungrateful animal.
I cannot believe you actually posted this question.
