A few Persian Cat Questions....?

Hi!
Alrighty, i am getting a Persian kitten in 4 weeks (it will be eight weeks then)
But i do have a few questions, Persian cat owners.....help! :)

1. What cat food is best for a Persian?
2. What litter is best for a Persian?
3. What grooming tools are best for a Persian?
4. When i am at work, what should i do with the little guy? Cage him? Let him rome around my house? ?
5. Any additional information i should know? That would be very much appreciated! :)
Thank you SO much for your time and answers! :)

From where? Reputable breeders NEVER let kittens go younger than TWELVE WEEKS so please DO NOT adopt from this person. You'll be supporting a horrible backyard breeder and most likely end up with a kitten with PKD.

PKD - Polycystic Kidney Disease is an early onset form of kidney disease that Persians are genetically predisposed for. Reputable breeders test to see if kittens carry this gene and if they do - they don't breed them. Bad breeders DON'T and then end up with litter upon litter of PKD positive kittens. A cat with PKD can end up in renal failure as four years old.

Persian coats can NEVER be brushed. They need to COMBED. Brushes pull out and break top coat hairs and do little to remove the dead hairs of the undercoat. A Persian's coat must be fully combed at least EVERY OTHER DAY ALL YEAR LONG to prevent matting. Are you really going to be dedicated enough to spend at least 10 minutes regularly combing this cat? If not - don't get a Persian.

With their flat faces a simple cat cold can easily turn into a full blown URI. So special care needs to be given at the very sign of sniffles in a Persian. Persian cat eyes tend to tear and the cat can end up with badly tearstained fur. Eye Envy's one product I swear buy and a month's supply will run you around $20.00.

Not that ANY cat should eat cheap cat food but especially not a Persian. A poor diet will reflect in a dull, shedding, shabby coat. A Persian MUST be fed a quality meat-based diet with little to no grain. They also can have issues with picking up some shapes of food so you have to take that into account as well. My Persian and Exotic Shorthair eat Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Innova Evo. Both are 45-50% meat protein and grain free. They're also large enough pieces and easy for them to pick up. They also eat a high quality canned food daily. Expect to spend about $50 a month for food.

Because of their high maintenance Persians are one of the breeds most often dumped at shelters. People buy them on a whim or because they think it'll impress others without a clue the care they require. So you don't end up one of these people please buy a book and do LOTS of research on them before getting one. And on that note, if you do have the time and finances to be able to care for one - adopt one from a shelter. I can almost guarantee there's at least one Persian at a shelter near you. And if you want to make sure the shelter Persian is PKD- it's a simple cheek swab DNA test that your vet can do for you.

What comb/brush should i use for my persian cat?

I have a one year old persian cat. She is doing really well. no Matt's perfect in every way. But something tells me the comb i am using is not doing much good as it seems to just rip hair out rather than getting rid of loose fur. I use a fine toothed metal comb.

I am looking for some really good grooming tools for her as i don't want her to get matted in the future, and grooming seems uncomfortable for her right now as it often leaves her meowing while im doing it. i don't want her to be in pain.

Does anyone have any links to sites where i can buy some perfect grooming tools. I have looked but i cant seem to find any.

Thanks x

I've got a Chinchilla Persian with the most amazingly long fur! I use 2 types, a big wide tooth comb which doesn't hurt him too much (I used to use a fine tooth comb but it was pulling too much and was hurting him), and to remove the excess fur, i use a brush, i've posted links to the ones i use.. Hope this helps!
