Online Dog Training Certification
Is it worth a try? (dog Training)?
As I stated in another question I am really interested in learning more about do training after i graduate may 26th. Due to where i live I don't really have the option of meeting other dog trainers and have really no idea how to get my foot in the door to learning. So I found a program it's done both online and in real life. at the end of the 4-5 months i get to take a test and get a certification.
What I'm asking is, could the be a step in right direction to learning more about training dogs?
Here is the curriculum--

well i've grown up on a ranch and worked with the dogs we use to train cattle as well as i walked dogs for two summers. I know a lady her who shows aussies i've spoken with her before but i don't know if i could ask her to be a mentor?
I also live in a sparsely populated state. I learned to train dogs by training dogs. I made quite a few mistakes along the way. In fact I still make them. Coursework like this online course will help you but it will not replace the actual experience that you will gain by training lots of dogs. If this person is an obedience trainer or shows in other performance sports like rally and agility, you have the potential to learn a lot from her. If she just shows in conformation then she may not make a good mentor as the style of training is quite different. You also might want to attend some obedience/rally trials so that you can get a good picture of some really well trained dogs. Granted for household training attention heeling isn't mandatory but having that picture will give you something to strive for in your own dogs. It is also a good place to get to know other trainers and maybe learn some training techniques if they aren't too busy showing their own dogs. I try and show my dogs every other year at least in obedience/rally just so I can learn some new stuff. The 100-200 mile drive is worth it. Like you, I am quite isolated and am always hungry for new techniques and information. Good luck.
