how do i become a dog walker in Ontario?
i work shift work and have retired from high impact sports. I love dogs and walk mine every day for an hour so i would love to combine both passions and earn extra money at the same time. i have no idea where to begin or how to get started.
Over here in the Cornwall vicinity, there are teenagers offering to walk dogs for $2.50 a hour and then there are people receiving $15.a hr.
It all depends on the credentials and the recommendations.
The staff that are employed at my Boarding Facilities have to learn Training and Behaviour Techniques and they definitely must be open and willing to be educated in How to Read the Body language and other signs of the different Canine breeds. I, also have them take a First Aid Course for Canines given by St John's Ambualnce.
And with all of the above, they begin basically at min.wage and their work includes "scut" work. Poop patrol ( verifying if the latter has worms etc), daily cleaning of the facilities , brushing and above all observing and interacting with their charges and keeping them mentally stimulated.
You should consider taking a few courses from an experienced dog trainer (or offer to do a "stage" at a couple places - Dog Clubs etc) prior to beginning this type of work. This will lead you to become known to the Canine Community and in the mean time you will be learning valuable experiences that may help you read, anticipate and deal with any possible problems with the Canine that you would be responsible for while you were walking said dog.
Your experience ,abilities and contacts will determine the type of money you will be earning.
