What would be a good classroom pet for 4th graders?

I can spend up to $300. I heard that hamsters bite and die of heart attacks pretty easily so I'm going to steer clear of those. It needs to be a pet that does well with supervised handling and is not likly to bite without major provoking (something that a 9 or 10 year old might do without realising). We have a sink in he room so the kids can wash their hands before and after handling the pet and I can take it home every weekend and holiday (winter, spring, summer breaks and similar). We just hatched out some eggs and the kids did well with the baby chicks to be gentle and listened when I told them they had enough and needed to be put down. I can also take the pet home at night if it can handle the change everyday. I can also have more than one if they get along.

The first reason being they are great for kids. They are handleable, friendly, and curious of almost everything. They love having alot of attention and lots of things going on around them, whereas other animals can be easily stressed by these things.
