How do I go about getting a dog walker's references and what should I ask for?

Hi, my partner and I would like to hire a dog walker for our 5month old puppy now that my new job means she( our puppy) has to stay alone at home too long.
I placed an ad on the internet and got a few replies, problem is none of them has done it before.
I would have to give someone a copy of our house keys and would like to know if it is unreasonable of me to demand proof of address and id to copy in case my puppy (she's chipped) is stolen or my house burgled and I could then give those details to the police? I know there is a lot of identity theft going on but if I would have to trust them with my puppy unsupervised and my house keys, surely the would have to trust me with their info? Can someone please give me some advice. Thank you.

I WOULD NOT give my house keys to someone that responded to an ad I placed on the Internet, especially since none of them have experience pet sitting!
