teaching guard dogs question 2?
just for the record a owner should never hit its own dog. if some attacks you the the dog will go for you rarther than the attacker. just to set the record straight. i work with the dogs play drive. i make it fun for the dog by working with toys which simunlate pray. then go from balls to bite rope. then when the dog get from puppy to adult that is when its agression sets in. this is when you get the expert to be the attacker by waving a knive around. then the dog attacks the stranger by biting his arm on command. then lets go on command.
just to set the record straight. i am not a back yard beeder. i take my dog to school and work with the dogs and the pofffesionals. to protect my building site. cheers for all the answers though.
also you have 2 types of dogs. dogs that are breed for working and dogs that are breed for pets. rotvilers and pitt bulls are very good guard dogs only if they are trained properly from a young age. if not they can be agressive and just attack anything
I seem to have come into this late because I don't see a question here, but I do see a couple of things I do not agree with. First, there is a difference between watch dogs, guard dogs, and attack dogs. What is being described is attack dogs. Pits and Rotts do not make good guard dogs, it's not in their blood. Pits do make good attack dogs and require very little training for that purpose. Rotts need a little more work for that task, but they were originally Roman war dogs, so they take to the job as well. They did guard the money for Rottweil butchers as they traveled; the butchers put the money around the dogs neck and anyone brave enough to take it was man enough to take it.
A German Shepherd is an example of a guard dog. They have been bred to the task for so long that a good example will take up the job with little or no training. They guard their owners property and flock, including house and family. They will herd playing children away from snakes. They will not usually attack human intruders -- they will corner and hold an inside intruder, or run an outside intruder off. If the dog sees the intruder as a threat to his people, that is when he will go for blood -- nobody messes with a shepherd's flock.
Have never heard of any dog attacking his owner rather than his owner's attacker. One of the things that make dogs such good companions to man is that they love their people no matter what. Praise gets better results than hitting them, but there are times when you need the more immediate result and do need to drive a scolding home with a little slap -- such as when you find your 90 lb dog with the next door neighbor's Chihuahua in his mouth, or when he grabs the steak off your dinner plate.
Am surprised to learn there are two kinds of dogs. The AKC and every other registry has such a wide variety. Terriers aren't really work dogs, nor are hounds, nor spaniels. Sporting and other types must all be pets I guess.

Doberman puppies, what do you know & how can I make her the best trained guard dog from home.?
My boyfriend just bought a full breed doberman puppy, for my children also saying we needed a good guard dog.. I need to know what all I can do from home to train her into a good guard dog to work off commands, & to obey every command I give her.. She is 6 weeks old, we are planning on getting her ears done as well.. I don't have the time or money for dog school & don't know if all that is necessary.. I want to be able to train her on my own with specific commands.. Can you please help me only providing if you are knowledgeable of this breed.. Tell me some commands, tell me what not to use & say.. I need all help possible because I want this dog to be the best I have ever had she was not cheap..
omg I am terrified now after reading some of your answers, especially the dcm, the heart problems, my heart has sunk, & I feel sick now.. I dont even know what to do now Im so scared I made a huge mistake
I happen to be on Dobe #9. You can't train a dog at home to be a so called guard dog. Dobermans are watchful and alert, but guard dogs are professionally trained and cost thousands of dollars. Just train your puppy (which should still be with the breeder for another 2 weeks) the things you would train any other dog. If you bought this breed solely because you wanted a guard dog, you were barking up the wrong tree. If she has the correct temperament, she will warn you of strangers and/or strange things/noises when she grows up. Just teach her the normal stuff like how to heel on a leash properly, sit, stay, down, come, leave it, off, no, etc. We got our first Dobe when our Sons were 3 and 6 years old, and they are now almost 30 and 33. I did NOT purchase a Dobe to be a guard dog. I purchased a Dobe because I liked what the breed was all about, watchful, alert, loyal, easily trained, easily groomed, AND I do find the appearance of the breed to be beautiful and elegant. I also do like the intimidation factor that comes when someone knows nothing about the breed. I want to warn you of something.....the things that you are describing will make your dog a dangerous liability to you, not an asset to your family. I also don't know what you paid for her, nor do I care, but you did NOT get her from a reputable breeder as good breeders do not sell their pups at 6 weeks, and DO have their cropped BEFORE the dogs are placed in their new homes. So, if you just happen to think that $800.00 or $1000.00 is a lot money for a PUREBRED, it isn't. That IS dirt cheap. Also, if you don't have the time or money to take the dog to school, I can promise you that you won't have the time to train her period. Training is crucial with this breed, and if you happen to have got a timid pup, you WILL end up with a fear biter. Good luck with all, but PLEASE get this *guard dog* thing out of your head.
