How will I know which dog to pick from a rescue centre?

ok so we had a beautiful puppy and had to give him back to the breeder cos of my mum's allergies. I am so depressed about it but my family want to adopt a dog from a pound instead, and I'm happy to do this as it might help me. Nothing can replace my puppy but a new dog definitely would help, because spending time with my friends dogs helps.

So anyway I know that we need to get a hypoallergenic breed or one of the breeds that we DEFINITELY know my mums not allergic to. That's not a problem.

What I don't know is which dog to pick!? What age is best? Can you train a dog who is 4/5 etc?
How will I actually know if a dog is going to be vicious or aggressive later on?

My auntie adopted a dog from a pound and he seemed so lovely and when she got him home he was aggressive to visitors. How will I know what to look for in a dog to avoid stuff like that?

Well you take a chance every time you adopt a rescue. you never know what they've been through in their lives.

My dog is a rescue too and he is very territorial. I personally don't see this as a bad thing though, as no one in their right mind would try to break into my house while he is home.

I've put basic obedience on my dog (it can be done), and even though he doesn't particularly care for visitors, all it takes is a simple "Leave it, go lay down" and he reluctantly obeys.

Props to you for considering saving a life! Often times the dog will pick you rather than the other way around

A place I can leave my dog during the holidaies in New Zealand?

Hey, my whole family might be going overseas for the summer holidaies, and we have no one to look after my dog ;(

I was wondering if you guys could recommend a good ?doggy care centre? in New Zealand where i could leave him for maybe, 5 - 10 days.

Also do you know of any place (In New Zealand) Where they also train your dogs while they look after them? that would be nice

There are plenty of dog hotels, one I can think of the top of my head is Dogs and Mogs.
