Sneaky BSL-- Your Thoughts?

Elgin, IL is attempting to pass severe restrictions on all "pit bull" looking dogs. Restrictions include $500,000 liability insurance, six foot high fences, signage announcing a "dangerous" dog, mandatory spay/neuter, mandatory obedience training, mandatory microchipping, and more.

I'm curious as to how you feel on this? [I'll post my followup answer when I get a nice flow in, I don't want to influence anyone.]
The TDs are for...what? 0.o

My Answer:

While most of these things are a *positive* for the dogs, the average owner can NOT afford this. Owners who can't and have no where else to turn will dump these dogs on the shoulders of shelters and rescues where they will become taxpayer problems [ohh politicians, you sneaky bastards..] or will be euthed on spot.

BSL may as well translate to Legal Genocide.

This is a horrible thing that is actually happening all over our country. Oregon almost passed a law to ban Pit Bulls but it was dropped and hasn't been brought up for 6 months. Hopefully, it never gets back up there.

I agree with anyone who owns a beautiful loving and sweet Pit Bull(s). I own 5 and they are the sweetest creatures in the world. This is simply a "quick fix" to stop the fighting and attacks but it should never be brought up in the first place. Also, I agree with you. MORE than half of bully breed owners cannot afford this and they will have to get rid of their beloved dog. This is why so many people try their hardest to bring up petitions and stop the ban from taking place.

This problems comes up because of poor training, a bad owner, and in the end, the dog usually gets euthanized. If a law like this passes in another city, the bully breeds in the shelter will be euthanized if they are not adopted in time while the unfair tactic of The Grandfather Clause lets current owners keep their dogs but the dogs MUST be altered.

When they tried to ban all Pit Bulls in Oregon, my most favorite Pit Bull in the world was in a shelter and I, at the time, was begging my mom to let me adopt her to prevent her from being euthanized but we had 5 dogs and no more room. Luckily(like i said before) the ban did NOT pass and I was very happy because not long after, Scully got a brand new home and she is no longer living in a shelter.

If everyone could realize that Pit Bulls are not "terrible, dangerous, killer" dogs, they would understand the breed better and there would most likely be a better outcome for Pit Bulls.

EDIT: Forgot to bring this up. In a recent behavior test, more than 80 dogs breeds were tested and among the breeds that scored the highest were Pit Bulls. They scored even higher than Golden's and Labs.

ANY dog can be a threat in the wrong hands and ANY dog can become a danger to their community. No matter what the breed is, when a dog attacks it actually does not necessarily mean it is aggressive and mean. It could have felt threatened, intimidated, challenged, or MANY other possibilities.

A mom asked me if she could bring her niece for a private dog training session and I said yes?

I said yes, because I remember in Petsmart children were encouraged to attend classes, but only now I realized this child is 5 years old! I am not sure how to address the issue as I thought she was older. I have liability insurance but am still a bit worried,.. I know some trainers only allow children over 12 but those are for group classes, would it be OK for a private class? I train near a park where there is a playground. I am a dog trainer by the way.
I am certified dog trainer and have liability insurance, looks like owner wants to really do class, but some days has this child she does not know where to leave, I am thinking to invent something like my insurance does not cover it? dog is 100 lb intact GSD that lives with a baby, sounds like a good boy but you never know!.

I've always allowed well trained/behaved children to attend my classes even my group classes. But then I also train children to train their dogs through 4H. I've also judged children as young as 4 years old in peewee dog shows. So I've never had a problem with having children around. In many cases they are a great distraction as long as they follow my instructions. I use children in my CGC tests quite often. Again I'm very careful as to what I want them to do and I have parental permission. In 30 years I haven't had a wreck.

Since this is a private lesson, I'm assuming that there will not be other dogs present. so you can request the the parent provide a coloring book or other activity to do while you are teaching. If the child seems to have an interest use the child as a distraction during the lesson. In family situations I feel that the entire family needs to know how to handle the dog especially in recall situations. The dog should learn to come to everyone in the family or house hold. If the five year old lets the dog out, the five year old should be able to call the dog back. this is why it is a good idea to get the whole family involved in training. Plus it keeps the training and commands consistent between family members.
