new dog wanna do things right from the start?

we just adopted a shelter dog who was a stray for a long time and it seems he's never lived in a home he is unsure about alot of things ...he is potty trained somehow we have had no accidents... we've had him for five days so far and were focused on making sure he felt safe and loved also he has a cone on from the neutering that makes things difficult... its very important to us that this new dog has a sense of nobody is gonna hurt me here, but we also know that there need to be rules from the very beginning the problem is he doesnt know words i could say no all day and he just looks at me like "who is no"? i dont want him to think its his name how do i show him i dont approve of what he's doing and teach him what no means
I want to train the dog myself so that we have things to do together and he bonds to me not the trainer I want to help this dog learn good behaviour and have a fun and happy life

You have to change the inflection in your voice. Be firm without screaming or yelling. We adopted a dog from the shelter too and she was very unsure about our home in the beginning. The way she flinched and cowered told us that she more than likely came from a less than ideal situation and her previous owners must have enforced their rules by hitting her, which is something we would never do. A firm "no" or "leave it" seems to get her attention just fine.
