Leash training –puppy is over excited when going out.?

My pup has been living in my small apartment for last 2 months (goes got down the steps to eliminate 3 times a day, and did all the play in my livingroom). Well, now he is 4 months and has gotten all the shots. Ya…..! Now I need to take him everywhere I go.

I read how to train your dog to walk beside/side you without pulling the leash here: http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/training-a-puppy-to-walk-on-a-leash.html

This morning, for the first time, I took him out for a walk. Well, he was over excited, running all over, sniffing things, and was trying to pull me. However, He doesn’t have a problem wearing a collar.

Will he calm down as the time goes by? How long will it take for him not to get excited about going out? Any tips ?

I'd be excited too after being cooped up inside lol.

Start by showing him YOU are in charge, if he is pulling etc, make a quick 180 and walk the other way with him. Keep doing this anytime he is pulling, trying to get away. Praise him when he is by your side behaving, whether this be by rubs and 'good boy, yay!' type praise or giving him a treat. I always have mine walk on my left, they know their place and rarely try to go to my right unless its play time.

They catch on quick if walked often. Just maintain control, do not let him walk YOU ;-)

How can I get my 6mth Cairn Terrier to stop barking?

We live in military housing so our yards are connected with the neighbors and limited.. I just purchased the 'birdhouse outdoor dog bark control' by petsafe, yesterday - he barks, growls and barks more.. I know he doesn't like the high pitched noise but I'm starting to think my dog is smarter than the birdhouse! It says wait 2 weeks but it doesn't seem to do anything and I'd rather get a refund than wait it out.. I grew up with dogs and have trained many, but never dealt with a terrier. I'm not one for cruel punishment (putting a shock collar on a 7lb animal) and I don't want him to think speaking is bad.. Just help him realize that a butterfly wont play with you no mater how much you bark at it. I understand this is a hyper active breed, they need attention constantly, they're extremely vocal - so please don't educate me on the 'Terrier Breed'..

Any experience with a Cairn? Or reviews on the outdoor birdhouse bark control? Serious answers and thoughts please.... Thank you

I have two Cairn Terriers and run a Cairn Terrier Meetup group. I am sorry, you are doomed. The best any of us have been able to do is tell the dog he/she is a very good boy/girl, stroke and reassure the dog through the barking. They can be distracted pretty easily (that is if you can get their attention!). Try filling a soda can with coins and taping the top closed. Whenever the dog barks inappropriately shake the can near him. Do not shake this can for other behaviors, nor have it around and randomly shake it. Save this for when you want to get his attention and distract him. Be sure you have something else for him to do rather than barking, like chasing a filled Kong. Good luck, my dogs are 5 and 7 and they bark, bark, bark.
