Dog Training Aid
Dog Training Aids: Is There A Most Important One?
You the dog owner are the most important dog training aid your new arrival will ever have.
Why is that so? You are the chief. You choose all the other dog training aids. You must learn to use aids correctly. Without you no dog training aid is worth its salt. You are responsible for all dog training aids applications because you do the work.
As the chief of all the other dog training aids your work begins long before you bring your new animal home or at least it should. You have decided you have the time and desire to devote to the new puppy. You have the time for the relationship and you have the time for training. Most importantly you have the desire.
Make planning ahead a priority and both you and your puppy will have success. You should take some time and do some advanced research before you bring home a new puppy.
You should and before the pup comes home do the following.
1. Purchase a dog cage or crate. The dog cage or crate is the number 1 recommended dog training aid. Cage training your new animal will absolutely become the "cats meow" when it comes to house traing a new dog. I won't go into the benefeits of cage training but they are extensive. You just owe it to you and your dog to cage train.
2. Puppy proofing your home and your yard is an excellent idea. If there are rooms or areas you don't want the dog to enter then plan to buy the proper gates. Inside or outside pick up or remove anything you do not want your new pup to find. As the chief dog training aid. Keeping a young pup safe from harmful materials and out of trouble is your responsibility.
3. Foods: Do some research, ask some questions. There are a multitude of foods available for your dog. Popularity may not be any indication of quality. I don't put much stock in pet store owners advice they exist to make profits. If you have a store owner and you have learned to trust him he should help. Your vet if you have one is likely more knowledgable and should better be able to assist you.
4. Dog toys: This is an easier job for the chief dog training aid to get done. Buy a few nylabones and matching them to your new pups current size will help with his need to chew. The goal is to make his toys safe, durable, fun and have a purpose. It is a good idea when possible to make toys washable too.
5. Collars and Leashes: Don't waste your money on high quality leather dog collars or leads. Buy those when the pup has matured and is less likely to chew on them. In the beginning it is quite alright even advantageous to purchase a light nylon collar and lead very especially for puppies.
As a new or inexperienced chief dog training aid it is upon you to do the best you can for your new pup. There are dog training aids for any dog to fit any situation and training goal. The key is using them correctly.
Remember you are the chief, the boss, the one in charge. You are the one who must know what and how to do it. If you don't learn first how to train and use dog training aids. You are setting both yourself and your new animal up to fail.

Disadvantages of guide dog training?
So far-
If the guide dog is not trained correctly or enough. When going to its listed job- blind persons assistance. It may lead the person into a busy road or the wrong place. This will and may risk the life of the person.
When training the dog the trainer may become attached to the dog this is seen as bad because that dog could be helping aid disabled people.
What you're talking about aren't disadvantages but potential concerns. There is a difference.
The disadvantages of guide dog training are that it is labor and time intensive, much more so than cane training. Guide dogs only have a working life of around 8 years and then you have to start all over again with a new dog while you're desperately missing the dog that has come to feel like part of your body and soul. Guide dogs can become ill and unable to work, which rarely happens to a cane, and they are costly to maintain because they require food, veterinary care, equipment, exercise, and time. Guide dogs need care throughout the day which means you must fit your life around their schedule as much as they do around yours, making sure they eat and toilet on schedule so they maintain reliability in not toileting inappropriately or being made to feel uncomfortable holding it when they really need to go.
There are ways training and placement can go wrong, but these are exceptions, not the norm. What are some potential problems with guide dogs?
1. A dog may develop a chronic condition and have to retire early.
2. A dog may burn out and have to retire early.
3. The dog and handler may fail to bond.
4. A dog may be attacked by a loose dog and have to retire early.
Things like the dog not being trained correctly or sufficiently are going to be abundantly apparent during team training which typically lasts 3-4 weeks. When dogs break training it is nearly always due to operator error, an owner who failed to maintain the dog's training regimen so his skills became rusty. An inability to work for all but one person (such as a favorite trainer or puppy raiser) is going to be abundantly apparent even before team training.
A guide dog cannot lead a person into a busy street or to the wrong place because neither of those things are his job. It isn't the dog who decides when to cross the street, but the handler. A guide dog performs the same basic job functions as the long cane and a person certainly doesn't wait for the cane to tell them when to go or where to go. With both a guide dog and a cane, the human operator is responsible for listening to traffic and deciding when to cross, and for keeping track of where they are and where they are going, as well as how to get there. The dog's job is to identify obstacles in the person's path. When a guide dog fails in his job, a person gets bumped into something, not lost or run over.
I don't know what kind of presentation you're doing, but it's clear you have many misconceptions about guide dogs and how they work. You should take some time to learn more about them before doing a presentation on them. Try visiting http://seeingeye.org
