Dog Sitting Tips
I need help teaching my dog sit? any tips?
There are many ways to get a dog to sit. If you goal is to merely get him to sit and that's it, then you simply state the command as you gently push hi behind down, and then reward him with lots of praise when he does it (and maybe even a treat). Keep repeating this. Eventually, he will associate "sit" with well, sitting.
However, if you do this, then all you've really taught him is a trick. You want a dog to sit and stay seated until you give a command to move. Now we are talking obedience training. For that, I recommend a prong collar, leash, some kibble and maybe a can with some pennies in it to make noise. When you give the sit command, he should then sit as normal. But when he start to get up even though you haven't told him to, go back to him, jerk gently on the leash such that the prong collar gives him a "nip" (ask someone to show you how to properly attach the prong collar to your dog and how to use it - if you don't use it properly, it may be ineffective or even overly painful to your dog) and repeat the "sit" command. What you are doing is correcting him, establishing yourself as the "alpha" and teaching him that when you say "sit", you mean sit until you say otherwise. Of course, you can't say "sit", leave the room and expect him to be a perfect gentelmen (although some dogs are that good). But you can have him stay seated until you dictate otherwise, and that's the start of your properly obedient dog.
Good luck!
Dog Sitting Tips
Any tips for dog-sitting?
As you might already know (from a Q in which I asked the price of dogsitting), I failed to get a job this summer; so I was going to make an announcement for dog-sitting. But I really want to make a good job, so I want some tips on what to do, and what not to do, or be more careful in some situations, or what should I ask from my client, and maybe, what to expect from it, or anything relying on dog-sitting...
It would be the first time I'm dog-sitting, but not the first time I take care of a dog.
Check this question back as I may ask you a few more questions on Additional Details. Thanks.
Get their number.
Ask when they will be back.
Find out if there are any things the dog should not be doing.
Ask if they need to be fed, and when.
Ask if the dog has allergies.
Get the vet's number.
Call the vet if anything goes wrong.
