London Zoo, a delight for the animal lover
The London Zoo has the distinction of being the oldest scientific zoo in the world. Inaugurated in 1828, the zoo was initially conceived of as a centre for scientific research, but the mission of the zoo changed over time, being made accessible to the public at large in 1847. Located on the northern border of Regent's Park, the zoo is operated by the Zoological Society of London. Presently the zoo houses a diverse array of 755 different species encompassing more than 15,000 animals, giving it the status of being one of the most extensive selections of wildlife in the United Kingdom. In recent years many of the larger animals have been relocated to spacious environs at Bedfordshire's ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, but London Zoo still retains a magnificent selection of fauna from around the world.
London Zoo features several wildlife collections, each representing a wide selection of exhibits. The Asian Big Cats exhibit houses a couple of Sumatran tigers and a family of lions native to Asia. Visitors to the zoo are provided with the opportunity to learn more concerning these magnificent creatures, and the zoo's conservation work regarding the preservation of these wonders of nature.
Gorilla Kingdom as its name suggests is devoted to the largest primate species on the globe. A specially constructed enclosure provides these apes with a comfortable habitat while permitting close observation for visitors.
Meanwhile the Rainforest Life exhibit reproduces an authentic tropical rainforest habitat with typical denizens such as monkeys, armadillo and sloth. Nocturnal animals like rats and bats can be conveniently observed here.
Giants of the Galapagos focuses on the massive Galapagos tortoises, the largest of their kind in the world. For the lover of avian life the Blackburn Pavilion is the exhibit of choice, with a multitude of tropical birds flying freely in the expansive bird house.
Butterfly Paradise will be irresistible for the butterfly enthusiast, with specimens from regions as far-flung as South-east Asia and Africa. Another not to be missed attraction is the aquarium, which contains a dazzling array of colourful and unusual fish.
