I want to train my dog to fetch birds when hunting in a field.?

I have a 4 year old labrador retriver who is excellant at fetching birds on the water. But I want to bring her into the field. She has a problem chewing on the birds.

The transition shouldn't be to hard, since you already have her trained for the water. All you need to do is get her trained for the scents, and use a more "field" bird decoy instead of a water one. I like the pheasant tail ones, that really helps your dog get accustomed to the feathers.

As to the chewing problem, that's a discipline issue that you'll need to just teach her that it's wrong. Don't be to rough on her though because she is getting those waterfowl for you either way, and she gets really excited

What is the ideal age to begin training a hunting dog?

The dog is a springer spaniel and I was wondering what age should I start training I was a hound who is now about 2 ½ months
