Is it me or is the average person extremely selfish these days?

It just seems like we are in a very "me" driven culture. Everything is about people satisfying their wants and desires. Damn the consequences, do what you want without thinking how it effects others and watch as the world spirals downward. Stick your kids with daycare and baby sitters you don't even know so you can go party. Then when your child is molested by a stranger, whom you brought into your own home, you cry about how it effects YOU instead of your child. Humans are disgusting and selfish. We are all animals just the same.

There are many cultural biases that promotes selfish behaviors, but the selfishness seems lately to have been economically motivated through the latest (to me in the last 25 years) revisions in economic policies towards privatization and the exaggerated political/social value of independence and self-sufficiency...as if we didn't have enough of it with the "cowboy ethic" and "pioneer" values. ((I assume for some reason you're from the USA...)) Throw in a bit of the recession and people generally become selfish, tightwads, call them whatever you'ld like.

It's almost as if we have forgotten that general well-being of the majority is much more easily obtained through cooperation and through a general sense of social cohesion. The economic system, by far the most powerful influence on our lives, (I would argue even more than 'family' values) promotes however, exactly the OPPOSITE(!) - competition and division - which if an individual is successful works fine, but the cost to the many people around him/her falls within various categories; financial, social breakdown, health, etc.

Capitalism promotes unreal desires and expectations and therefore many of the selfish behaviors. Lots of other cultures throughout history have done exactly the opposite.

I try to care for pets or see people. I good at a time. Love and children love animals. Where can I go and see who is looking for this?
